Auli: Where the Himalayas Turn Into a Ski Slope
Auli exists almost entirely because of its ropeway — before the cable car connected it to Joshimath below, this stretch of meadow was little more than a beautiful, hard-to-reach pasture. Today it's India's answer to a proper Alpine ski destination, snow-covered slopes framed by Nanda Devi and Trishul, and a gondola ride that's become as much the attraction as the skiing itself. Even in summer, when the snow's gone and the slopes turn into wildflower meadows, Auli remains genuinely one of the most scenic short trips in Uttarakhand.
Top Attractions in Auli
Auli Ropeway (Joshimath-Auli Cable Car) — one of Asia's longest and highest cable cars, connecting Joshimath at around 1,900m to Auli's meadows at roughly 3,016m, with sweeping Himalayan views along the way
Auli Ski Slopes — Auli's main draw in winter, with well-groomed slopes suited to both beginners and more experienced skiers
Gorson Bugyal — a high-altitude meadow roughly 3 km from Auli, spectacular for wildflowers in April and May and panoramic Garhwal Himalaya views
Auli Artificial Lake — a man-made lake used to generate snow for the ski slopes, also a scenic spot in its own right near the top of the ropeway
Chattrakund — a smaller, quieter lake nearby, worth combining with a Gorson Bugyal walk
Joshimath — the base town for Auli, home to the Narsingh Temple and functioning as a spiritual and logistical hub for the wider Char Dham circuit
Ropeway and Ski Slope Timings and Fees
Auli Ropeway: Generally operates from around 8:00 AM, with the last cable car departing roughly 4:20 PM in winter and around 5:30 PM in summer, though exact timings shift with weather and season. Tickets typically cost somewhere between ₹700-1,500 for a round trip, depending on the season and which source you check — it's worth confirming current pricing at the Joshimath base station before you go. The ride itself takes about 20-25 minutes one way, covering roughly 4 km and climbing over 1,100 metres, making it as much a scenic experience as a practical way up.
Important note: The ropeway has faced temporary suspensions in the past for safety and maintenance reasons, so it's genuinely worth confirming current operational status before finalising travel plans, rather than assuming it will be running.
Auli Chair Lift: A separate, shorter lift from the GMVN complex to the ski slopes, with a two-way ticket costing around ₹500, primarily used by skiers heading to the main slopes.
Note: All fees and timings for Auli's cable car and chair lift shift periodically, so confirm current rates and operational status locally before your visit.
Skiing and Snow Activities
Auli is one of India's premier ski destinations, with the GMVN running skiing courses and equipment rental for beginners through to more advanced skiers. The main ski season runs roughly December to March, when snow cover is at its best, and the slopes here are considered some of the most well-maintained in the country, occasionally hosting national-level skiing competitions. Beyond skiing, activities like snowboarding and simply walking through the snow-covered meadows draw plenty of visitors who aren't necessarily there for the sport itself.
Best Food to Try in Auli
Auli itself has limited dining options given its small, resort-focused setup, mostly centred around GMVN and private hotel restaurants serving simple North Indian and Garhwali meals. Joshimath, the base town, has a wider spread of small eateries serving regional Uttarakhand food alongside standard travel-friendly options, worth exploring if you're staying down in the valley rather than up on the slopes.
Best Shopping in Auli
Auli isn't a shopping destination — most visitors head to Joshimath for basic supplies, woollens and simple local handicrafts, rather than expecting much in Auli's own limited resort area.
Dress Code in Auli
Warm, layered clothing is essential, especially in winter when temperatures at this altitude drop well below freezing — proper ski gear if you're hitting the slopes, and windproof jackets even for those just riding the ropeway or walking around. Summer visits (April-June) are milder, but evenings still turn cool enough that a warm layer is worth packing regardless of when you go.
Culture of Auli
Auli's identity is fairly recent compared to Uttarakhand's older pilgrimage towns — it's grown almost entirely around adventure tourism and skiing, developed deliberately by the state as a winter sports destination rather than emerging organically over centuries. Joshimath below, by contrast, carries much older spiritual significance, serving as one of the four cardinal mathas established by Adi Shankaracharya and functioning as a key stop on the wider Char Dham pilgrimage route toward Badrinath. That mix — modern ski resort above, ancient spiritual town below — gives an Auli trip an interesting dual character most visitors don't initially expect.
Major Events in Auli
Auli Winter Games / Skiing Championships (Jan/Feb): National and state-level skiing competitions held on Auli's slopes, drawing serious winter sports enthusiasts and spectators alike.
Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra: While centred more broadly across the region, this massive pilgrimage held once every twelve years passes through areas connected to the wider Garhwal Himalayan landscape that Auli sits within.
Language Spoken in Auli
Hindi is the primary language spoken throughout Auli and Joshimath and works almost everywhere.
Garhwali is the everyday language for many locals in the surrounding villages.
English is understood among ski instructors, hotel staff and tour operators, given the steady flow of both domestic and international visitors.
Traveller tip: If you're visiting specifically for skiing, book ski equipment and courses in advance through GMVN, especially during peak winter weekends when both slopes and rental gear can get busy fast.
One Day Itinerary Suggestion
Morning ropeway ride from Joshimath to Auli, taking in the Himalayan views along the way, followed by a few hours on the ski slopes (winter) or a walk to Gorson Bugyal for meadow views (summer), and an afternoon visit to Auli's artificial lake before heading back down via the ropeway in the late afternoon.
Best Time to Visit Auli
December to March is the prime skiing season, with reliable snow cover and the full ski resort experience in swing. April to June offers a completely different side of Auli — wildflower meadows, clear mountain views and pleasant trekking weather before the monsoon sets in. The monsoon months (July to September) are best avoided given heavy rain and slippery trekking conditions, while October to November offers a quieter, clear-sky alternative between seasons.
How to Reach Auli
Auli itself doesn't have a direct road connection in the way most hill stations do — travellers reach Joshimath first, then either take the ropeway up to Auli (about 4 km) or drive the roughly 13 km road route instead. Joshimath sits about 253 km from Dehradun, which has the nearest airport (Jolly Grant) and the nearest major railhead. The drive from Dehradun or Rishikesh takes a full day given the mountain terrain, so most visitors plan an overnight stop en route rather than attempting the journey in one long stretch.
