Udaipur: The City That Built Itself Around Its Lakes

Of all the cities in Rajasthan, Udaipur is the one that feels least like a desert state at all. Lakes instead of sand dunes, marble palaces reflected in still water, and a pace that's noticeably gentler than Jaipur's crowded bazaars or Jodhpur's steep fort climbs. It's often called the most romantic city in India, and once you've watched the City Palace catch the evening light from a boat in the middle of Lake Pichola, that reputation starts to make complete sense.

Top Monuments in Udaipur

  • City Palace — a sprawling complex built over nearly 400 years by successive Mewar rulers, blending Rajasthani, Mughal and European architectural styles

  • Lake Pichola — the artificial lake at the heart of the city, created in the 14th century and now home to two of Udaipur's most iconic structures

  • Jag Mandir — a marble island palace in the middle of Lake Pichola, reachable only by boat, historically used as a royal retreat

  • Jag Niwas (Lake Palace) — another island palace on Lake Pichola, now a luxury hotel, but still visible and photographed by every visitor to the lake

  • Saheliyon Ki Bari — a garden built for the royal ladies of the court, with fountains, lotus pools and marble pavilions

  • Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace) — a hilltop palace overlooking the city, best visited around sunset for panoramic views

  • Jagdish Temple — a large, intricately carved Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, right next to the City Palace

Monument Timings, Entry Fees and Boat Rides

City Palace: Open daily, roughly 9:00 AM–5:30 PM, with ticket counters typically closing about half an hour before that. Entry fees vary depending on which sections you visit — the palace, the museum, or both — so it's worth checking current rates at the counter or online before you go.

Jag Mandir: Accessible only by boat from the City Palace jetty, with entrance fees generally bundled into the boat ride package itself. A one-hour boat ride costs roughly ₹325 for adults, with shorter half-hour options also available; prices tend to rise a little for rides after 3:00 PM.

Saheliyon Ki Bari: A smaller, easily walkable garden with a modest entry fee, best visited slowly rather than rushed — it's meant to be a peaceful break between the city's bigger monuments.

Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace): Entry fees are charged separately for people and vehicles, and it's genuinely worth timing your visit for golden hour, when the views over Udaipur and its lakes are at their best.

Note: Udaipur's monument fees and boat ride charges shift periodically, so it's worth confirming current rates before you plan your day.

Best Food to Try in Udaipur

Udaipur's food carries the same Rajasthani backbone as the rest of the state — Dal Baati Churma and Gatte ki Sabzi are easy to find at most local restaurants. But being such a lake-facing, tourist-friendly city, Udaipur also has a strong rooftop-restaurant culture, where the food sometimes takes a back seat to the view of Lake Pichola at sunset — still worth doing at least once. For something more local and less touristy, head into the old city's smaller eateries for a proper Rajasthani thali, usually far better value than anything on a lakefront menu.

Best Shopping in Udaipur

Udaipur's old city lanes are good for miniature paintings in the traditional Mewar style, along with silver jewellery, block-printed textiles and leather juttis. Hathi Pol and Bara Bazaar are the areas to head to for a proper browse, and it's worth bargaining a little, as is standard practice across most of Rajasthan's markets.

Dress Code in Udaipur

Udaipur is fairly relaxed for a Rajasthani city, especially around the lakefront and tourist areas, but modest clothing is still appreciated at temples like Jagdish Temple, where shoulders and legs should be covered. Comfortable footwear matters given the walking involved between the City Palace, the old city lanes and the various ghats around Lake Pichola. Evenings by the lake can get pleasantly cool, even in warmer months, so a light layer is worth carrying for boat rides after sunset.

Culture of Udaipur

Udaipur carries the Mewar dynasty's legacy with quiet pride — a lineage often described as one of the oldest ruling families in the world, and one that famously resisted Mughal rule longer than most other Rajput kingdoms. That sense of historical dignity still shows up in how the City Palace is maintained and presented, less like a tourist attraction and more like an actively lived royal legacy. The city's relationship with water is central to its identity too — Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar Lake aren't just scenic backdrops, they're deeply tied to how Udaipur was originally planned and how it continues to define itself against the rest of arid Rajasthan.

Major Festivals in Udaipur

  • Mewar Festival (Mar/Apr): A local spring festival with music, dance and a lively procession along the ghats of Lake Pichola, particularly popular with visitors.

  • Shilpgram Utsav (Dec): A crafts fair held at the nearby Shilpgram village, showcasing folk art, music and handicrafts from across Rajasthan and neighbouring states.

  • Gangaur (Mar/Apr): Celebrated with particular devotion in Udaipur, involving processions of decorated idols through the old city streets.

  • Diwali in Udaipur: The City Palace and surrounding lakefront areas light up beautifully during Diwali, making it a particularly striking time to see the city.

Language Spoken in Udaipur

  • Hindi is understood and spoken throughout the city and is your safest bet almost everywhere.

  • Mewari, a Rajasthani dialect specific to the region, is the everyday language for many locals.

  • English is common in hotels, restaurants and among guides, given how heavily Udaipur features on both domestic and international travel circuits.

Traveller tip: Boat rides on Lake Pichola get busy in peak season, so booking a slightly earlier or later slot — rather than the popular sunset window — often means a quieter, more relaxed ride at a similar quality of light.

One Day Itinerary Suggestion

Morning at City Palace, followed by Jagdish Temple next door, an early afternoon boat ride to Jag Mandir, a quiet stop at Saheliyon Ki Bari in the late afternoon, and sunset at Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace) to close out the day with the best view in the city.

Best Time to Visit Udaipur

October to March is the ideal window, with cool, pleasant weather that makes both boat rides and walking around the old city genuinely comfortable. Summers (April to June) get hot enough to make daytime sightseeing tiring, though the lakes do offer some relief compared to drier parts of Rajasthan.

How to Reach Udaipur

Udaipur has its own airport, Maharana Pratap Airport, with regular domestic flights from major Indian cities. The city is also well connected by rail, with direct trains from Delhi, Mumbai and Ahmedabad among others. Road trips work well too, particularly from Jaipur or Ahmedabad, both comfortably reachable within a day's drive.
